This is a Photoshop tutorial for the following icon technique.

This tutorial is mainly intended for drawings and cartoons... mainly line-art. Choose your poison... I went with a drawing of Tank Girl by Jamie Hewlett. This particular image had TANK GIRL scrawled real big in the upper left corner, so I used a hard paint brush and the color white to take it out.

Desaturate the image if it's in color (Image ---> Adjustments ---> Desaturate or Ctrl+Shift+U). Now, go to the Brightness/Contrast menu (Image ---> Adjustments ---> Brightness/Contrast) and tweak the settings until the image looks very defined and not dark. For this image, I took the Brightness up to about +40 and the contrast up to +30.

Crop your base, resize, and sharpen to your preference.

Pick a bright, vivid texture (the one below was made by me), and drag it on top of your image. It should be bright as opposed to dark, or you'll cover up your image too much. Set the texture to Multiply 100%.

Now you can add text. For this look, I use Arial Black at 8-10pt. Type out whatever phrase you want. Oops, the white doesn't show up. Use the eyedropper tool to select a color from your icon (I went with the red in the corner). Create a new layer UNDERNEATH you text layer, and use the Rectangle Marquee tool to drag around the text and fill with a solid color below the lettering. If you choose, hold down the Shift or Ctrl key and select BOTH the text layer and the new color accent layer by clicking on each. Now they should move together unless you click a different layer. Go to Edit ---> Transform ---> Rotate and rotate the layers ever so slightly.

This is a Photoshop tutorial to make icons like these:

Crop and prepare your base. For this project, try to pick a picture where there's a plain, white or light-colored background. Also, crop so that your subject is off-center. I'm using this base of Ayumi Hamasaki. I prepared it by sharpening twice (Filters ---> Sharpern ---> Sharpen), using the blur tool to smooth out her skin, and then tweaking the RGB in the Curves menu (Ctrl+M). I also went to Image ---> Adjustments ---> Brightness/Contrast and upped the contrast about +11.

Duplicate your base and desaturate it (Ctrl+Shift+U). Go to the Brightness/Contrast menu again and adjust the Brightness/Contrast until the desaturated image looks vivid enough. Take the Rectangle Marquee tool, drag it over about half or more of the image, and delete. Now there should only be one section of black and white covering the image, like below.

Next, open a nice, LIGHT texture (the one here was made by me) and drag it onto your image. Set the texture to Linear Burn 65% or so. You want a nice base so that the background isn't just plain or white anymore. Erase any parts of the texture that cover your subject.

Create a new layer, set it to Color Burn 100%, and use some nice splatter and/or swirl brushes of your choice in a color that matches your image. The color I used here is #8f364b.

Select your base layer from your layer menu and use the Rectangle Marquee tool again to select a small part of the image. Copy it by either right-clicking and select "copy" or hitting the shortcut Ctrl+C. Paste the copied selection by right-clicking again and selecting "paste" or hitting the shortcut Ctrl+V. Drag the pasted selection to and empty part of your icon. You can the go to Blending Options and add an 2px inside stroke and drop shadow like I did. Lastly, you can add text. For this icon, I added an A in the font Fiolex Girls in the upper right-hand corner.

And that's it :)

I came up with a BRILLIANT idea for new icons (not really). I've made about 15 or so icons featuring a little stick figure (StickGuy) holding up a sign for awareness. I made a base template, so if you have any words or phrases you'd like to see on his sign, let me know and I'll most likely make it (provided it's not cruel or vulgar). So. Yeah.

If you've seen the Lori Petty/Naomi Watts movie, this was the British comic it was based on. There's also an 800x600 texture for you. Some examples of use:

Q: How the hell do I install patterns?
A: Patterns come as .pat files, which are compatible with Adobe Photoshop (I'm not sure if they're also compatible with PSP, but you can try). To install your pattern file, extract it from the .zip file, then move it into the following folder: C:/ ---> Program Files ---> Adobe ---> Photoshop ---> Presets ---> Patterns. There should be a number of .pat files already in that file... just paste in your new one. Next time you open Photoshop, it should be available for use. To be honest, you don't even HAVE to do this... you can open your file from whatever folder it happens to be located in... this method is just a lot easier for keeping all your patterns in the same place for easy access.

Q: Okay. Now how do I load patterns after I've installed them?
A: Open a new canvas. Go to Edit ---> Fill..., and select "Pattern" from the dropdown menu. Click on the pattern dropdown menu, then the little arrow on the right side (much like the arrow on the brush menu). Simply select "Load Pattern" from the menu, and select the pattern file you want to load.

Q: Now that they're installed, how do I use them on artwork?
A: Pretty much in the same way you use any floodfill color or pattern. Go to Edit ---> Fill, select "With Pattern," and floodfill your canvis with the pattern. Easy. You can play with opacity settings, blending options, and layer masks as you please.

PS: basic blur animation & curves coloring

Here's a quick slap-dash tutorial for curves coloring, as well as blurred background animation. You can get a much cleaner effect by using the "tween" setting, but I was feeling lazy ;)

Go ahead and crop your base out. I'm using a promotional image of Charlie from Lost.

Sharpen twice, and use the blur tool at whatever setting you like to even out areas that get TOO sharp. I also used the Smudge tool to get rid of the T printed on the sand, because it looked kind of lame there by itself. After that's done, duplicate your base twice. Set the first duplicate to Screen 61%, and the desturate the second (Shift + Ctrl + U) and set to Soft Light 100%. Flatten the image.

Now we're going to play with curves. Go to Image ---> Adjustments ---> Curves to open your curves menu. I typically just play around with them until I get an effect I like, but for the purpose of this tutorial, I'll write out the exact settings I used for the effect on this image. First of all: click on the line in the grid first. If you don't, inputting numbers by hand won't really work. Curves basically adjusts the amount of a certain color that appears in the image... you can make it less/more red, green, or blue by playing with Curves. Click the drop-down menu for these options.

Anyway. Here are the settings I used for this image - RGB: Input 110, Output 129; Red: Input 83, Ouput 95; Green: Input 76, Ouput 97; Blue: Input 91, Output 104. Remember to click on the line first, or it'll go at an angle instead of curving.

Now it's more green/yellow/blue and less red :)

Now for setting up your animation. Duplicate your base and use the Motion Blur filter, set to 20, on the duplicate. Use the eraser tool to erase the blurred area covering Charlie. Repeat this step twice, setting the two other layers to Motion Blur 40 and Motion Blur 95. You should now have four layers... your base, and three layers with varying levels of background bluriness and Charlie erased out. DON'T FLATTEN.

Now move your icon to ImageReady, either by clicking the button on the toolbar or going to File ---> Edit in ImageReady. If your animation bar isn't visible (see picture below), go to Window ---> Animation. There should be a black arrow on the right-hand side of the animation bar. Click it, and select "Make Frames from Layers." You should now have four frames, one for each layer. But there's no Charlie on the last three! That's easy to fix... just select a blurred frame, then click the little eye next to the base frame containing Charlie on your layer menu so that he shows up in each frame.

Select Frame 3, hit the black arrow, and select "Copy Frame." Then select Frame 4, hit the black arrow again, and select "Paste Frame." On the menu that pops up, choose "Paste After Selection." Repeat this for Frame 2. You should now have 6 frames in the following order: 1-2-3-4-3-2 (see below).

Make sure the lower left-hand corner says "Forever" and not "Once." That's how many times your animation will loop, and you want it to loop forever, not just once. Click the little arrow at the bottom of each frame to change the time before transition. Set the base frame to one second, and all other frames to 0.1 second, or whatever time you think looks good.

You can get a much cleaner effect by using the "Tween" option between frames, but it adds a lot of extra frames, and I'm feeling lazy, so I'm not going to go into it ;)

Save your animation as an OPTIMIZED .GIF by going to File ---> Save Optimized As... And that's it, you're done :)
